Cellular Signal Recommendations for WTI Devices

Start with antenna placement. Measure the improvement. Add a booster only when needed.

Placement + measurement + verification

WTI recommendation at a glance

Move the cellular antenna outside the rack, cabinet, cage, or other obstruction before purchasing a booster. Compare signal readings and confirm stable application connectivity.

Preferred first step Relocate or improve the passive antenna

Follow the measured approach

Recommended decision path

  1. Relocate

Move the existing or compatible passive antenna outside the rack or obstruction. Keep the cable as short as practical.

  2. Measure

Compare RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, SNR, LTE band, registration stability, and actual application traffic.

  3. Boost only if needed

Evaluate a direct-connect IoT booster when usable outside signal exists and the passive solution remains inadequate.

A booster cannot create carrier coverage

A booster amplifies an existing signal. If no usable outside signal is available, evaluate another antenna location, a directional antenna, another carrier, or a different backup connection.

Choose the right antenna approach

Omnidirectional or directional?

Choose based on the signal environment, tower location, and installation constraints.

A practical starting point

Omnidirectional antenna

Use when tower direction is unknown or usable signal is available from several directions.

Mount clear of nearby metal and provide a ground plane when the antenna design requires one.

Focus toward a known tower

Directional antenna

Consider when outside signal remains weak, the serving tower direction is known, and more focused gain is needed.

Aim and secure the antenna. Use low-loss coax for longer runs and verify final performance.

Antenna illustrations are conceptual. Actual coverage depends on antenna design, frequency, and installation.

When passive improvements are not enough

Direct-connect IoT booster option

Evaluate the booster as part of the complete RF path, including antennas, coax, adapters, modem, carrier, and installation location.

Electrical outlet required

The booster must be plugged into an electrical outlet using its AC power adapter. Plan for an available outlet at the booster installation location.

What should improve?

Compare the readings before and after each change, using the same measurement method.

RSSI

Total received power

Less negative = generally stronger

RSRP

LTE reference-signal strength

Less negative = generally stronger

RSRQ

LTE reference-signal quality

Less negative = generally better

SNR

Signal margin relative to noise

Higher = generally better

These arrows show the general direction of improvement, not numerical thresholds or measured test results.

Stronger readings are only part of the result

Also check LTE band or tower changes, registration stability, and actual VPN, remote management, failover, or telemetry traffic.

Before accepting the installation

Compatibility and installation checklist

  1. Confirm the modem.
This guide applies to domestic WTI cellular modems. Contact WTI for international or world modem configurations.
  2. Verify the RF connections.
Use the Main/primary antenna port and confirm connector type, gender, and impedance.
  3. Check bands and cable loss.
Confirm the carrier bands used at the site and keep cable runs as short as practical.
  4. Verify the complete installation.
Confirm an electrical outlet is available for the booster, along with grounding, protection, weatherproofing, carrier requirements, and real application connectivity.
