WTI Donates to Keller Peak and Butler Peak Fire Lookouts

Irvine, CA, January 8, 2014 – In appreciation of the valuable community services and historical preservation efforts offered by the Adopt-A-Lookout Program, WTI has renewed its donation to the Keller Peak Fire Lookout and Butler Peak Fire Lookout, both located within California’s scenic San Bernardino National Forest. Thanks to assistance from volunteers, individuals and companies such as WTI, the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s Adopt-A-Lookout Program helps seven remote fire towers in the National Forest to continue to provide both fire spotting service for local communities plus an enlightening educational experience for those who visit the towers.

WTI’s donation presented by the President of WTI, has helped to offset staffing and maintenance costs at two remote fire lookout towers, ensuring that the towers are kept safe and functional and can remain open to the general public.

“These fire towers have a long history of helping to protect the San Bernardino National Forest from wild fires and have also served as a terrific tool for educating visitors regarding the challenges of forest management. We’re proud to have the opportunity to give back to such a valuable program and we’re excited to see the improvements and changes at the towers.”

Standing at an elevation of 7,882 feet, the Keller Peak Lookout was built in 1926 and is the oldest remaining original fire tower in the San Bernardino National Forest. Located at a remote site, three miles east of Running Springs, the Keller Peak Lookout is also a brief walk from the spot where a B-26 bomber crashed in 1941; some of the wreckage of the bomber is still visible. The Butler Peak Lookout at 8,535 feet above sea level is located between the towns of Green Valley Lake and Fawnskin. From Memorial Day through the late fall season, both Lookouts welcome visitors to enjoy the majestic views from the top of the towers and learn about the mountains and historic firefighting procedures.
